Toyota 4Runner 2012
When it was introduced in 1984, the Toyota 4Runner was little more than a van with rear seats and an envelope for the bed. The 2012 Toyota 4Runner is a much more polished tower designed to better compete with the long list of SUVs and crossovers on the market. But despite all the updates, the 4Runner still has some key elements that help maintain its reputation for off-road. Unlike many crossings on the road today, the 4Runner still employs the body on frame construction and a solid rear axle.
The 4Runner comes with a choice of engine, a 4.0-liter V-6 that produces 270 hp and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission (the four-cylinder was dropped for 2012). The 4Runner Trail Edition extends the capabilities of off-road traction by offering Toyota Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which releases electronic stabilizer bars for the suspension joint and increased travel. Additional off-road technology currently on the 4Runner includes Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control.
For 2012, SR5 and Limited models get new automatic steps, while SiriusXM is now standard on SR5 and Trail grades. The 2012 4Runner also has Entune, Toyota new infotainment system that combines smartphone, navigation, and a long list of high-tech options in a single interface.
What's new
Like many models in the Toyota lineup, the 2012 Toyota 4Runner is available with the new Toyota Entune infotainment system. In addition to navigation and XM satellite radio, Entune will connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth and will provide limited functionality checks of vehicles and voice command. Entune also offers a number of mobile applications, including Bing, MovieTickets.com and Pandora. Also new on the 2012 4Runner is an option card automatically running for SR5 and Limited.
Price Range: $31,090 - $40,630
